Like in Pennsylvania, Michigan’s leaders are having trouble attracting enough people to fill critical roles to protect society, so they have come up with a novel idea. A lawmaker there has introduced a bill to give first responders and prison guards free hunting and fishing licenses.
Wonder if that approach might help persuade more folks to be volunteer firefighters here? We have a critical shortage.
I recently received a hand-written letter to the editor from one of our regular readers in Two Rivers who checked in with a question.
His question: “Why in the world would anyone care about a lake report from 2017? What I, and I’m sure other fishermen, too, would like to see is a more recent survey.”
Our dear reader (and I do mean that most affectionately – I like this guy, plus I’ve watched some Bridgerton on Netflix; just don’t start calling me Lady Whistledown) is referring to our May 31 report on Big Arbor Vitae Lake in Vilas County.

Almost 50 years ago, Dan Harmon III had a vision of introducing people to the sport of trout fishing.
Harmon, a Trout Unlimited member from Oshkosh, Wis., who passed away last year at age 92, helped the Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited Chapter start a fly fishing school with mentors showing students the ins and outs of a sport that can appear intimidating and complicated. That school now bears Harmon’s name, and is still going strong. The chapter held its workshop June 1-2 on the Tomorrow River at Riverside Bible Camp near Amherst.

Rivers are seen by many anglers as mysterious and complicated places to fish – especially, where to find fish. They’re quite different from lakes. And if you tally the factors or conditions that affect rivers but don’t affect lakes, I would say yes, rivers certainly are more complex in character.
First, what are the differences? For one thing, flow – the moving water. Other river conditions include variable water level, water clarity changes within the system after heavy rains – or greater clarity because of a lack of water and sediment input.
Flow is a primary consideration because it’s a constant on a river. Let’s focus on how to go with the flow while river fishing.

Those of us with long memories perked up in April when voters at Wisconsin’s annual conservation hearings supported registering nonmotorized recreational “assets,” which often go adrift or are left stranded on weak ice.
Imagine that, making folks pay fees to register canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, nonmotorized boats, portable ice shanties and other equipment that help us hunt, fish, explore, soak up sunlight and breathe fresh air. Other states, like Minnesota, impose such fees to cover work by conservation wardens and law-enforcement officers to reunite owners with their possessions after severe storms or simple carelessness.
