For anyone who has considered trying bowfishing, there may be no better time than the present in Minnesota.
June is a prime month for those who seek rough fish in the state’s waters via bow and arrow. Rising water temperatures make fish visible in the shallows during early summer, and heavy rains across parts of Minnesota this spring actually have improved conditions.
“This is probably my favorite time, and honestly a lot of bowfishers’ favorite time to go out,” said Cody Klaus, of Lakeland.

News headlines quickly amplified by social media a couple weeks ago suggested that a 300% increase in pintail bag limits across North America was a foregone conclusion for 2025 waterfowl hunting seasons.
A commentary in Outdoor News last week clarified what’s actually happening. The good news: A jump from a one-bird pintail limit to a three-bird limit next year could happen. Minnesota hasn’t seen a three-bird pintail limit since the 1990s. The reality: Unless water conditions in prairie Canada change dramatically between now and then, a tripling of the pintail bag isn’t likely.

The Quad Cities has a long history with freshwater mussels in the Mississippi River and other local tributaries.
Mussels were first used for tools and food by the Native Americans that lived along these rivers. Then in the late 1800s, it was discovered Midwest mussels were perfect for making buttons. The harvest across the Midwest was impressive. Within a couple decades though, resources became depleted.

A lot of fishermen dream of boating a true 6-pound smallmouth bass. A lot of those same anglers never will. Not only is a 22-inch bronzeback a rare specimen, but they also aren’t prone to suicidal feeding binges where anyone can catch them.
To land a personal-best smallmouth, you either have to get lucky, or you must make it your mission. The latter is a better bet, and it starts with identifying the best water on which to begin your search.
If you want to catch supersized smallmouth, you need to target them the right way Read More »

I’ve spent some time talking about the use of live bait as well as artificial bait.
Personally, I use artificials more than live bait by a ratio of about 9-to-1. I am not averse to live bait; it’s a personal preference. I’m not going to try to convince you to use artificials like I do, so please use whatever you like, as long as it’s legal. That said, I’d like to talk about lures.
Steve Sarley: Choosing right lure is only half an angler’s job Read More »
