Are whitetail hunting changes coming to Michigan?

The Michigan DNR’s Deer Management Initiative – which involved two series of virtual meetings (a series in each peninsula) – has concluded and resulted in an order generated by the recommendations that the Natural Resources Commission will consider. If the NRC adopts the order, it could result in some significant regulation changes for the upcoming deer season.
The DMI, aimed at evaluating and responding to present-day deer management challenges in the Upper and Lower peninsulas, was the result of a request by the NRC in late 2023. The DNR acted quickly, requesting volunteers, appointing working groups, and holding the first meetings in late February. By the end of April, it had finished its work.

Two different paths to perfect rounds at the Minnesota trap shooting championships

Senior Joshua Gilbert of Champlin Park High School in Minnesota provides a case study for what youth trap shooting leagues offer kids.
With very little shooting experience, Gilbert joined the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League four years ago. The spark started when his dad inquired about his interest in hunting, but first they wanted to see how he liked busting clay targets.
“(My dad) asked if I wanted to go hunting, and I said, ‘No, I just want to shoot trap,’” Gilbert said. “The rest is history.”

Rhode Island lawmakers approve bill to ban “captive hunting” operations

Lawmakers have approved legislation that would let Rhode Island join the more than half of states with a full or partial ban on “captive hunting” — a hunt that occurs within a structure designed to restrict the free movement of animals and prevent them from escaping.
The bill would bar the use of manmade or natural barriers intended to prevent animals from fleeing the confined area of a hunt. Private lands set up as hunting or shooting preserves, or game ranches, are included.

Unique ‘canopy walk’ at Franklin County Metroparks in Ohio takes visitors through the treetops

The phrase “walk in the woods” has a whole new meaning for folks on Columbus’ east side and anyone else interested in the outdoors.
Franklin County Metroparks opened a new walking trail in mid-May at Blacklick Woods Park in Reynoldsburg – an east Columbus suburb. The difference in this trail is that it is actually a long wooden path that rises 40 feet off the ground. Called a “canopy walk,” it loops an eighth of a mile through tops of the maple, shagbark hickory, and oak trees that abound in the park.
