Norfolk Southern to pay $15M for East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment

The federal government agreed to a $15 million fine for Norfolk Southern over last year’s disastrous derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, and the railroad promised to pay more than $500 million to complete the efforts to improve safety that it announced after the crash and address community health concerns.
Residents who had to evacuate their homes after the derailment were generally underwhelmed by the deal the Environmental Protection Agency and Justice Department announced in late May that doesn’t include any criminal charges.

Mike Raykovicz: Rediscovering an old tackle box a reminder of how important it is to take a kid fishing

I have several tackle boxes I use regularly, but I have another I’ve long forgotten about and haven’t used since I was a kid. It was warehoused in a space above our garage ceiling and I discovered it while fetching a picnic cooler I stored there.
After wiping off years of accumulated dust, I eagerly flipped the latch on the small container to see what I had placed there so many decades ago.

Pennsylvania legislator Dave Maloney to Gov. Shapiro: Game Commission needs transparency

The top Republican on the House Game and Fisheries Committee believes the recent meeting to appoint Stephen Smith as the executive director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission possibly violated the Sunshine Act, and he’s asking for the governor to get involved.
A spokesman for the Game Commission said commissioners followed the law when Smith was “appointed to the post during an executive session, followed by a special meeting when the move was finalized by a board vote.”

What is Gyotaku? If you can catch a fish, you can print it

A few years ago, not long after I purchased my current home, a friend pulled something out of his garage and offered it as a housewarming gift: a canvas fish print of a walleye. It was beautifully done, in color, and mounted on a reclaimed wood frame. I was grateful and happily hung it up in my new house.
This particular walleye wasn’t a 10-pounder you might have seen mounted on your grandfather’s wall. In fact, it was one you might catch on any given trip to Lake Erie or New York’s Oneida Lake. This fish print, or “Gyotaku,” was a piece of art and not a trophy.

Purple paint law is back in Michigan’s legislative spotlight

Michigan lawmakers are considering legislation to allow purple paint to signify no trespassing on private property, though the Department of Natural Resources has opposed the idea in the past.
Kalamazoo Democratic Rep. Julie Rogers partnered with Hancock Republican Rep. Greg Markkanen earlier this year to introduce House bills 5561 and 5562, which would add purple paint marks on trees or posts as an option to signify no trespassing.

Ohio’s 2024 sandhill count 15% higher than in 2023

Volunteer observers reported 412 sandhill cranes during the fourth annual Midwest Crane Count on Saturday, April 13, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The count was coordinated by the Division of Wildlife, International Crane Foundation, and Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative.
During last year’s count, volunteers observed 357 cranes. The 2024 results show a 15% increase in sightings from 2023, likely because of a growing breeding population of sandhill cranes, as well as greater survey effort.
