New York’s Erie, Niagara counties dole out annual sporting awards

The outdoor conservation community, including fishermen, hunters, trappers and the like, honor the stewards of New York’s natural resources every year through the county’s federation of clubs. The Erie County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs held its annual gathering at Kloc’s Grove in West Seneca on April 13.
Sportsman of the Year for Erie County was Jeff Jondle, of Marilla, current president of the Erie County Federation, a position he has held since 2018. Under his tenure, the Federation has been more proactive with community support activities. It has also become more financially stable as the group pursues available grant money.

New York Mixed Bag: NYS Outdoor Writers to hold spring conference in Oswego County

The New York State Outdoor Writers Association will hold its annual spring conference in Oswego May 30 through June 2. Headquarters will be the Clarion Hotel and Suites Riverfront in downtown Oswego. During the event, NYSOWA members will have the opportunity to fish Lake Ontario and Oneida Lake as well as the famed Salmon River and Oswego River.

Lows Lower Dam work continues in Adirondacks, with access still limited for outdoor users

Summer and likely fall access to a popular but remote Adirondack fishing, camping and paddling destination remains limited due to an ongoing dam reconstruction project.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation continues to remind the public that the gate on the access road leading to the Bog River Dam, also known as Lows Lower Dam, is closed for dam maintenance. The Lower Dam Road and parking area near the end of the road remain closed to public use for the duration of the construction project.

New Cowee State Forest opens up 3,700 acres for outdoor users in New York’s Rensselaer County

Public land access opportunities continue to grow in New York’s Rensselaer County. Earlier this month, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office announced the establishment of the 3,700-acre Cowee State Forest, a mosaic of parcels primarily connected to each other that also butts up to the Capital District Wildlife Management Area.
