Outdoor Observations: Many questions surrounding wolf shot in southern Michigan

In the last edition of Michigan Outdoor News we reported that a gray wolf had been killed by a coyote hunter in southern Lower Michigan’s Calhoun County.
What made the story so intriguing is that the only known wolf population in the state is more than 300 miles away in the Upper Peninsula. Since wolves remain federally protected under the Endangered Species Act – although many across the state, including me, feel they should be removed from such protections – the claim by the hunter that the wolf was mistaken for a coyote and killed in southern Michigan raised more than a few eyebrows.

Tappan Lake offers a cyclical saugeye fishery in Ohio’s Harrison County

If you had visited Tappan Lake in northeast Ohio in late 2007 or 2008, you would have found a saugeye fishery that rivaled any in the state.
Things, however, being cyclical in nature, turned the tides a bit on Tappan. After those heyday years in the early 2000s, saugeyes struggled to take hold.

Pennsylvania Game Commission boosts state doe license allocation by 91,000

Pennsylvania game commissioners, at their quarterly meeting April 13, announced the agency is increasing the number of antlerless deer licenses allocated statewide for 2024-25 by 91,000.
The new allocation of 1,186,000 is about 8% more than the 1,095,000 antlerless licenses allocated for 2023-24. The increase is needed, David Stainbrook the agency’s Deer and Elk Section supervisor, told commissioners, because in some chronic wasting disease management units, the ratio of antlerless licenses allocated to achieve the harvest of a deer has risen from 4-1 to 4.5 to 1.

Ag leaders from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana meet to discuss western Lake Erie water quality

The Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) watershed is shared among three states, covering nearly 7 million acres of land.
But when it comes to agriculture and water quality, there are no state lines. With that in mind, the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) recently hosted a discussion around water conservation with agricultural leaders from Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan to focus on improving water quality in the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB).

Grass carp eradication program continues in Ohio

A foreign fish once considered a harmless migrant to the United States is getting additional attention from the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) in order to control its numbers and threats to Lake Erie.
Grass carp, a variety of carp from the Far East, seem to love the shallow waters of the lake’s Western Basin, as well as its tributary streams, according to John Navarro, a DOW fisheries program administrator.
