Black vulture depredation permit allows taking of 3 birds for applicants approved in Illinois

Illinois farmers battling black vulture disturbances are being encouraged to obtain a depredation permit through the Illinois Farm Bureau again this year.
IFB recently secured a statewide permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The permit became effective April 1 and will be valid through March 31, 2025.

Action to save remaining Illinois wetlands gains steam

The Supreme Court’s decision in 2023 to roll back the Clean Water Act has meant less federal oversight in protecting the country’s wetlands.
Illinois does not have a standalone program, and one organization hopes state legislators will pass measures to change this. Wetlands clean the water, reduce flooding and provide fish and wildlife habitat.

Illinois Mixed Bag: Spring trout fishing opens April 6

The 2024 Illinois spring trout fishing season will open April 6 at 58 ponds, lakes, and streams throughout the state.
DNR stocks more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year in bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted during the spring season. An additional 80,000 trout will be stocked for the fall trout season, which begins in October.
