Lake Michigan cohos again dominate Illinois charter harvests

No pink salmon were reported during the 2023 charter boat season on Lake Michigan, ending a buzz that started when two state record “humpbacks” were caught during Illinois charter excursions in the summer of 2022.
But anglers did catch more than 30,000 salmon and trout on 2,140 charter boat trips last year, with cohos making up 64% of the take – the exact percentage that fish has averaged since 1979.

Cost-share program, Part 4: Local options that are worth exploring

So far within this series, we’ve primarily explored cost-share options available to private landowners through the federal farm bill, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While these can be great options, there are usually numerous opportunities available on a more local level that are worth exploring.

Wisconsin’s Makenna Vanderhoof, 16, proves she is up to challenge of Junior Iditarod race

Soft-spoken junior Makenna Vanderhoof from Shell Lake High School in Wisconsin does not appear to be someone who could withstand the brutal Alaskan wilderness, but anyone with that first impression would be wrong.
Makenna, 16, already is a seasoned veteran of the Junior Iditarod. She has been running the youth version of the actual Iditarod for three years. She started by borrowing dogs from veteran musher and 2023 Iditarod winner Ryan Redington, a friend of the family.

Understand suitable habitat for spawning sauger

Warmer temperatures jumpstarted the 2024 sauger and walleye migration in Ohio, turning the engine over in early February. The catching got more serious in March. Anglers started finding the numbers – the tantalizing numbers they expected from a pre-spawn pot of gold.
Those numbers occur more predictably below an obstruction such as a dam. This is not the only place for sauger to gather, but a good one.

Try a size 14 Adams; no better dry fly in Pennsylvania’s early trout season

Crowded fishing conditions in Pennsylvania are the norm during the first couple of weeks of trout season, especially on stocked waters. These crowded conditions can make it tough for fly-fishing. However, if a fly-fisherman wants to enjoy his time on the water, he or she may do several things.

Patrick Durkin: Year-round daylight saving time reduces car/deer crashes

When the humorist Dave Barry turned 50 in 1998, he compiled a list of things that took him a half-century to learn. One of his insights never fails: “A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter is not a nice person.”
Barry also was right about this: “You’ll never find anybody who can give a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight saving time.”
