63% of Illinois archery turkey hunters used crossbows during recent fall season

The Illinois DNR announced that the 2023-24 fall season harvest was 803 turkeys, a tiny increase from the 801 taken the year before, but well above the five-year average of 750. (Stock photo)

A few hundred more hunters hit the woods for Illinois’ fall turkey season this year – good news for an endeavor that has lost luster here and in other states.
One reason for the uptick may involve something somewhat controversial in the deer hunting community: the crossbow.
