Ohio hunters fall short of Division of Wildlife’s harvest ‘doe goal’

Mike Tonkovich, the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s deer program administrator, said the proportion of the total harvest that is made up of antlerless deer needs to at least be at 60% in order to keep the deer herd stable. This year, it was 55.4%. (Stock photo)

Ohio hunters during the just completed 2023-2024 deer hunting season harvested 213,928 whitetails.
Yet, the ODNR Division of Wildlife says the deer herd in the state is as large as its ever been in the state’s documented history. Why the seeming dichotomy? Supply and demand in its simplest terms helps explain the situation.
“Our goal is to provide enough deer to hunt and enjoy but not so many that they cause economic hardship.”
