Virtual fishing tournament encourages Iowa walleye anglers to report their catches for a chance at big prizes

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is partnering for a third year with MyCatch by Angler’s Atlas to conduct a statewide walleye fishing challenge that runs March 30 through June 30.
This year’s walleye challenge has been expanded to other states across the Midwest and into Canada as part of a larger fisheries research project funded by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. The Midwest Walleye Challenge uses the MyCatch mobile app to record the length of a fish. Participating anglers take a picture of the fish on a measuring device using the app.

Ice Fishing 101 event a learning experience for beginners on Mariaville Lake in New York

In what turned out to be the coldest day of the New York winter so far, 13 new ice anglers recently braved the cold and wind for Ice Fishing 101 on Mariaville Lake, in Pattersonville. These folks faced wind chills well below zero to learn a new skill set.
Despite the cold, it was a day full of smiles, laughs, and fish. This new event was a collaboration between Artemis Sportswomen, WildHERness, and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers.

Early season prices started at roughly where they were at the end of the 2023 season, and signs in the market show little expectation of any kind of serious rally in 2024. As of this writing, most of the marketing season has yet to develop.

Outdoor Insights: Unprecedented winter weather affecting Minnesota’s fish, wildlife and flora

On Sunday, sap dripped from a maple tree onto my vehicle in my driveway. It’s been a weird couple of weeks, and here are a few ways it’s affecting Minnesota fish, wildlife, and flora.
Outdoors scribe Joe Fellegy’s younger brother, Steve, has been tapping maples on the north side of Mille Lacs near Wealthwood for decades. This year, he tapped trees Jan. 31 – 19 days earlier than his previous earliest tapping record of Feb. 18, 1981.
