‘Spies’ watching Minnesota’s early-teal season say hunters continue to do well in not taking non-targeted species

The Minnesota DNR has completed its third and final “spy blind” report on hunter conduct and compliance during the special early teal season, and its findings for 2023 were unchanged from the past two years.
“Overall, the five-day experimental teal season in 2023 was again successful,” Steve Cordts, Minnesota DNR waterfowl staff specialist, wrote in the report. “The attempt rates and take of non-teal remained well below thresholds for an operational teal season.”

Judge issues $120 million order in Michigan’s Edenville Dam case for environmental damage after structure failed

The former owner of a Michigan dam is on the hook for roughly $120 million sought by the state for environmental damage when the structure failed after days of rain in 2020, a judge said. But it’s not known how the state will ever collect: Lee Mueller has filed for bankruptcy protection in Nevada.
“There isn’t that kind of money anywhere,” Mueller’s attorney, Troy Fox, said.

December grouse hunting in Michigan requires a different approach from early season

November 14 signaled the conclusion of the first portion of ruffed grouse season in Michigan. The second grouse season began Dec. 1, the day after the firearm deer season ended, and runs through Jan. 1.
The 16-day respite for the firearms deer season provides a distinct division of where you consider looking for grouse in the early versus late seasons.

Pennsylvania bear hunters do well in north-central and northeastern counties

Pennsylvania’s statewide regular firearms season for bears came to a close Nov. 21. Hunters in the traditional north-central and northeastern bear counties did well, but less so in non-traditional counties such as Huntingdon and Somerset.
Thus far this year, just 26 bears have been shot in Huntingdon County, and only 31 bears in Somerset County. These two counties have sometimes posted harvests of over 100 bears.
