New state-issued park permit limits hunting opportunities at New York nature preserve

New York State has issued a new use permit for a nature preserve in Saratoga County that is popular with waterfowl hunters, leaving in place a one-week duck hunting season and prompting proponents of hunting on the property to ponder their next move to seek more hunting opportunities.
The new permit for Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve in the Town of Clifton Park comes on the heels of a change to town law that further restricts the possession of firearms on the property after hunters indicated they planned to hunt navigable waters on the preserve as federal law allows, and not abide by the one-week season set by the town.

Here’s how to cut down on the number of wounded roosters you lose

If there was a contest between upland birds across the country to determine which species has the strongest will to survive, first place would go to the pheasant. Quail, grouse of various varieties, prairie chickens, and the rest of them would all have to fight for second place. It wouldn’t even be close.
Nothing will put you, and your dogs, through the wringer quite like a wounded rooster. Lost birds happen to the best hunters and the best dogs, but there are some things pheasant hunters can do to minimize the chances of one getting away.

Christine Thomas: Close encounters of the bird kind at little cabin

I am writing from the she-shed on the second morning of the 2023 deer season. The sun is well up and reflecting off a universe of frost crystals blanketing the newly picked cornfield in front of me. A tiny fawn has been out front for the past hour, trying to vacuum up enough harvest waste to be strong enough to evade the coyotes this winter. She was joined briefly by a cute 6-point buck, about an hour ago. No deer have been taken at the little cabin, so far.

Commentary: Wake up, educate yourself on Pennsylvania outdoor issues

In a letter in the Oct. 27 issue, headlined, Trying to Grab Our Money, the writer urged us to “wake up” and stop voting for the “crooks” behind House Bill 1300.
“Take time to educate yourself, don’t vote for the enemy – and you know what party that is…,” he said. “Stop letting unions be your voice!”
Well, I wasn’t sure what party he was referring to so I took his advice and spent some time educating myself. Here is what I found.

Iowa’s Clay County Ladies Pheasant Hunt keeps growing

In the movie Field of Dreams, a famous line is often quoted: “If you build it, he will come.” Something similar to “build it and they will come” is happening in northwest Iowa’s Clay County where for the past seven years, the Clay County Iowa Pheasants Forever Chapter has held a yearly Ladies Pheasant Hunt.
