Backyard and Beyond: A hummingbird heaven

Nature goes into overdrive as summer begins to draw to a close: spiders hunt relentlessly for prey, young animals practice vital life skills, the avian world prepares for migration.
Consider the scene in David Bendorf’s backyard, where dozens of ruby-throated hummingbirds battle for a sip of nectar, putting on weight for their long flight.

Cranberry Mountain WMA: Public access near New York City

Probably the most attractive thing about the Cranberry Mountain Wildlife Management Area is simply the property itself, about 1,200 acres that offers hunting – and fishing – possibilities not far from the New York City metro area.
Given that Putnam County location, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most popular stopping points for hunters within DEC’s Region 3 of southeastern New York, east of the Hudson River.

Fall Lake Ontario Counties derby nets Bridgeport, N.Y., angler $25K grand prize

In the Fall Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby held Aug. 18 to Sept. 4, Robert Karker, of Bridgeport, was the $25,000 Grand Prize winner after he reeled in a Chinook salmon that weighed 29 pounds, 13 ounces. He caught the king near Sandy Pond in the eastern basin of the lake on Aug. 29.
Karker was fishing with Mike Daley of Grand Island, Fla., and Jim Walsh, of Lakeport, aboard their 21-foot Starcraft Islander named “Fishin’ Impossible.” It was around 10 a.m., as they moved from deeper water to 103 feet, Karker walked over to the diver to check it out.

The fall muskie frenzy: Here’s how to catch them on some of Iowa’s top waters

They once were called the “fish of 10,000 casts”…the muskellunge. As fishing techniques have advanced and improved, so have the catch rates to the point that on a given day, especially during the fall, multiple muskies can be boated. Here in Iowa, stocking programs have increased the opportunity for anglers to catch a trophy muskie on several bodies of water.
Two areas in northern Iowa offer quality trophy muskie fishing: the Iowa Great Lakes chain of Big Spirit, East Okoboji and West Okoboji and Clear Lake. Other potential muskie lakes include Brushy Creek (Webster County), Lake McBride (Johnson County) Pleasant Creek (Linn County) and Black Hawk Lake (Sac County).
As with any type of fishing, there is a learning curve, which includes an understanding of the fishery, the fish and equipment.

Woodie Wisdom: Get to know this handsome, popular duck

The waterfowling industry is chock-full of imagery consisting of bearded, face-painted dudes lugging limits of greenheads out of swamps. Mallards get a lot of attention, and rightfully so. Who doesn’t love talking in a flock of them while standing stock still in the cattails next to a quivering retriever?

The problem is, mallards and quite a few other duck species often no-show when the party should be on. They also aren’t likely to be found on the smaller ponds and streams that are available on public land throughout much of the flyway. Those bodies of water are more likely to host a few teal, or the duck species that has probably saved more rough hunts than any other: the wood duck.
