Wisconsin spring survey shows stable waterfowl numbers, while pheasant and grouse counts drop

Results of the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) annual spring surveys of Wisconsin ruffed grouse, pheasant, and waterfowl are in, with the spring waterfowl breeding survey showing stable population numbers and habitat conditions for migratory birds.
In contrast, the spring surveys showed ruffed grouse and pheasant counts below the five year average, including an 11% decrease statewide in ruffed grouse drumming activity from the 2022 spring survey.

Ohio’s river water quality shows improvement

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) Director Anne Vogel recently announced that a comprehensive study of Ohio’s largest rivers shows tremendous improvements in water quality over the past several decades.
Ohio EPA launched its first-ever comprehensive large rivers study beginning in 2020 to measure changes in water quality since the 1980s and to identify any current issues impacting water health. The study found that water quality has improved tremendously over the years, with 86% of the state’s large rivers in good to excellent condition as compared to just 18% in the 1980s.

Decade-long study from Pennsylvania offers some surprises about behavior of deer

Who knew that deer salivate about two gallons a day or that a fawn has 272–342 spots on its coat? Or that a doe may choose to give birth to fawns near a road so that fewer bears, coyotes and bobcats are around? Or that a deer may consume more than 100 different plant species a year?
After a decade of following and studying 1,200 live-trapped deer, fitting them with ear tags and GPS radio collars to track their movements, Pennsylvania researchers are getting an unprecedented look into the behavior of one of North America’s most widespread mammals and their imprint on the landscape.

Michigan’s drumming surveys point to average grouse hunt in 2023

Grouse hunters should expect average to slightly below average flush rates this fall based on spring drumming surveys, said Adam Bump, the upland gamebird specialist with the Michigan DNR. But Bump acknowledges that he’s got thin data to make that prognostication.
“Keep in mind that we didn’t do these surveys for five or six years,” he said. “It’s a little hard to do a direct comparisons without more data points.”
