‘Root of Evil’ case takes down ginseng poachers in Ohio

The Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) is wrapping up a two-year undercover investigation into the illegal buying and selling of wild ginseng – an herb with a root that is highly valued (mostly in China) for its medicinal and spiritual qualities.
“Operation Root of Evil” ran from September 2018 to September 2020 and covered three ginseng harvest seasons, according to Kirk Kiefer, an investigator with the DOW who headed the operation.

Pheasants Forever, Ford Motors in Michigan team up to create more grasslands

A partnership between the Ford Motor Company and Pheasants Forever is creating more than 60 acres of grassland habitat at two Michigan parts distribution facilities, with the potential to grow into something more.
The work stems from efforts by Ford facilities and environmental manager Arthur LaChapelle to better use unused space at the Milan and Brownstown Ford parts distribution facilities south of Detroit, and the carmaker’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

Study to test effectiveness of Pennsylvania riparian buffers

At a time when Pennsylvania is largely counting on riparian buffers to achieve water-quality improvements needed to meet the state’s obligations for cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay, a multidisciplinary Penn State research team is studying whether the agricultural pollution-prevention devices are working properly.

Many Pennsylvania hunters still are waiting for licenses

It felt like hurry up and wait for Pennsylvania hunters whose licenses and antlerless deer tags purchased online in late June hadn’t arrived in the mail by mid-July.
Many who had rushed to buy when licenses first went on sale were still waiting for paper copies more than three weeks later. Some orders were only partially filled. The Pennsylvania Game Commission was fielding calls about the issue from “many” hunters, said agency spokesman Travis Lau.
