U.S. grand jury indicts Pennsylvania man, father of NFL player, for bald eagle killing

A western Pennsylvania man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for the alleged killing of a bald eagle in Mount Pleasant Township, Washington County, in early May.
Rodney Thomas, 50, of Canonsburg, fatally shot the mature eagle with an air rifle, in violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, according to the one-count indictment, which was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Pittsburgh, July 18. Thomas has been identified as the father of Indianapolis Colts safety Rodney Thomas II, 25, records show.

Dugout Creek-Yager Slough wildlife areas south of Lake Park in western Dickinson County, Iowa, is home to an array of marshes plus two unique and rare habitat types in the state — one of the largest and highest quality wetland fen complexes in the state and high-quality remnant prairie.
Unique and rare, fens are a type of wetland featuring groundwater flowing sideways, and percolating to the surface on a hillside through a layer of peat. Fens require thousands of years to develop, supporting many rare plants.

Muskie diet study could factor into a new management plan for Minnesota waters

One of the largest and most elusive fish in Minnesota, the muskie – or muskellunge – is an apex predator extraordinaire with a seemingly insatiable appetite. But in 2018, the hunter became the hunted. Some politicians, guides, lake association members and even regular anglers – most devotees to the state fish, the revered walleye – wanted to, more or less, kill state muskie management.
Their collective belief was that muskies adversely were affecting resident fish populations, especially walleye populations, in waters where they were managed and stocked by the Minnesota DNR. That, despite a stubborn body of scientific evidence suggesting otherwise.
