Outdoor Insights: Minnesotans should demand no net loss of public lands after state park transfer

The public policy low point for this scribe in 2023 has been the ongoing transfer of the Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux Community. By the time state residents became aware of this deal a few months ago, the matter already looked like a foregone conclusion.
To be blunt, I think citizens should be demanding no net loss of public lands here.

Southern Minnesota lakes get fish reboot after winterkill

At least for some lakes, fish winterkill during the 2022-23 winter season was likely the highest in the past decade, necessitating a round of unanticipated stocking of fish – from bluegills and bass to crappies and pike – for some southern Minnesota DNR fisheries offices.
The silver lining to the most recent fish kill could be excellent fishing in some locations in the near future, as stocked fish face limited competition for food resources, and young, stocked walleyes aren’t consumed by other occupants. Further, winterkill this past season could be a boon for some DNR walleye-rearing ponds.

Old standby dry fly, a Light Cahill, does the trick on some beautiful brown trout

Standing knee deep in a June trout stream just past sunset might not be appealing to many folks because of the immense swarms of flying insects, but to this fly fishermen it was heaven.
They didn’t care about me. No biters here. These bugs had a biological imperative to fulfill.

Does color really matter with muskie baits?

The term “every color of the rainbow” doesn’t apply to fishing lures, especially those designed for muskies. Lure manufacturers today offer far more options than even Mother Nature ever dreamed. A skeptic may say wild colors are simply an attempt to sell more lures, but an angler with a hot lure would argue otherwise. And a newcomer to the sport may find it all very confusing.
So, does lure color really matter?

Make sure to study your game camera warranties

You purchased that new trail camera you have been wanting and it is finally sitting on your table. You tear open the box, insert a SD card and batteries. The camera comes alive, and you head to the woods to get it out as soon as you can. The 12-pointer you have been pursuing does not have a chance now.
This is a common scenario for many hunters this time of year as we think about the fall. However, taking the time to read the manual and get those warranties registered is vitally important to the longterm use of your camera, and maybe your success in the fall.
