Youngstown, Ohio City Law Director objects to deer cull in park

Youngstown City Law Director Jeff Limbian is asking the Ohio DNR to “cancel, change, and reconsider killing deer in Mill Creek Park” in the city, according to a story on May 9 in The Vindicator of Youngstown.

Aaron Young, Mill Creek MetroParks’ executive director, said until the matter is resolved, efforts to reduce the white-tailed deer population on park properties will start outside of the city limits. That plan will start being implemented in the fall, he said, according to the newspaper’s story.

Are you still trying to find a way to put a notch in your turkey tag on this last weekend of the Ohio season? Well, don’t fear. The waning days of the season can be the best yet!
This is usually a time of despair for some hunters, but I have always loved the last few days of turkey season. I feel that some of the best hunting takes place the last weekend of the season. You just have to know how to hunt late-season birds.

Hunt is on now for Ohio’s bountiful wild asparagus

Feral asparagus plants frequently are found within ditch banks, which lie within the public right-of-way that are used for electric and telephone lines.
Fresh and tender asparagus cooked within hours of its harvest is as good as it gets and blows away any days-old specimens arriving at your local grocer from Mexico or California.

Consider targeting the skipjack herring on the Ohio River

I never gave skipjack herring a second thought – an overrated sardine, I thought – until I saw firsthand. The day started like any other day. Minnows jumping in the air changed it up some. I rifled a cast to parlay the unknown predator. My excitement cannonballed a 3⁄8-ounce sinker Carolina rigged to a swimbait, complete with a bird’s nest.

A recent acquisition by the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has added 492 acres to Woodland Trails Wildlife Area in southern Preble County. The total size of Woodland Trails now expands to 1,684 acres.
