Minnesota’s Lake Pepin isn’t a preferred opener option, but maybe it should be

Although it’s one of the Minnesota DNR-managed 10 large lakes, Lake Pepin likely doesn’t top the list for most walleye anglers as a primo destination for the May 13 fishing opener.

The southeastern Minnesota lake doesn’t generate splashy headlines or get the attention given such hallowed fisheries as Lake Mille Lacs, Upper Red Lake, Rainy Lake, or that breathtakingly scenic system known as Lake of the Woods. And Minnesota’s much-vaunted mom-and-pop resort culture doesn’t exist on Lake Pepin’s windswept shores.

Ohio DNR culls 132 more deer in the CWD zone as part of targeted removal efforts

There’s good news from the Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) in Marion, Hardin and Wyandot counties.
“I can’t say the disease is spreading there,” Mike Reynolds told the Ohio Wildlife Council in April. Reynolds is executive administrator of wildlife management for the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW).
His conclusion came while reporting on a targeted deer removal effort on private and public lands in the DSA.

A look at some top tactics for bass in the grass

Up north, anglers refer to vegetation as weeds or weedbeds. Down south, and increasingly across the bass belt, anglers generically call all weedbeds “grass.” So for fun, let’s talk tactics for chasing “bass in the grass.”
For starters, show me a lake anywhere with grass, and I’ll bet my favorite $25 crankbaits that it’s loaded with bass.
That’s probably the case with just about all of the natural lakes across the northern region and a big reason why bass fishing has grown exponentially there.

Somewhere in time with Joan Wulff, the First Lady of fly fishing

Let me begin by saying that Joan Wulff has never been able to teach me how to double-haul correctly. This was certainly not Joan’s fault. We all know that Joan is an excellent teacher and a superb fly caster. I just could never get my two hands to work together as a team and I have lots of wind knots to prove it.

But my sloppy double-hauling really reminds me of a relationship with Joan that spans decades and three generations.
