The biggest threats to Lake Champlain’s game fish, including Champlain’s markedly improved lake trout populations, may not come from well-known pests such as lamprey or alewives but instead from a small, non-native fish that has been slowly infesting waters closer to Lake Champlain.
Organizations on both the New York and Vermont sides of Lake Champlain are working to keep the round goby from getting into the lake, trying to educate those who enjoy the lake and its tributaries about the goby threat while they explore potential barriers to keep them out of the big lake.

The Minnesota DNR hosted a webinar on March 15 that focused on the state’s bison conservation program. Molly Tranel Nelson, DNR Parks and Trails Division regional resource specialist, offered a Minnesota bison status report along with future goals for the species.
