Illinois’ ratio of archery hunters tops in the country

Levi Baffa, of Washington, Illinois, arrowed this 12-point buck Oct. 15, 2022 in Peoria County. The deer’s rack had an inside spread of 18 inches and green-scored 153. This photo earned Baffa the award as the grand prize winner in the Illinois Outdoor News Best Buck contest. (Contributed photo)

Illinois deer hunters rank No. 1 nationally in at least one category: percentage who use archery equipment. According to the National Deer Association’s 2023 Deer Report, 74% of deer hunters in our state hunt with bows or crossbows. That is the highest ratio in the country, well ahead of second place Delaware, where 67% of hunters use archery equipment.
