Luckily we have pretty good ice conditions in the St. Cloud area. I would say I’m seeing 13 to 16-inches of ice on most lakes with lake travel being fairly decent compared to other areas of the state. Our lakes are extremely busy so please be courteous and patient with other anglers. Sometimes you will be fishing near others and that’s okay, just have fun.
I’m seeing a lot of crappies in basin areas from 18 to 35 feet of water. The fish have been fairly nomadic and I think the high fishing pressure is definitely making this worse, staying mobile and willing to work hard will definitely pay off. A Drop kick jig with a plastic or a Clam Pinhead Mino in the 1/16-ounce size has been doing all the work for me. I like to start aggressive with the Pinhead and work my way down to the jig and plastics if that doesn’t work. We have some nicer weather coming up so I hope everyone has time to get out and enjoy it!
