Upper Peninsula Fishing Report – July 31st, 2015


Pickford Area

Herring are hitting at the mouth of the St. Marys River around Drummond Island and Lime Island, and anglers are dialing in on a hot bite. Walleyes are keeping anglers busy at Round Island in Raber Bay and throughout Munuscong Bay. Bottom bouncers and nightcrawler harnesses are producing the best results. Fair numbers of perch are being caught in Lake Huron at Cedarville and Hessel.

Curtis Area

Fishing has been pretty good on Manistique Lakes. Perch, pike, bluegills, bass, and walleyes have all been active, and anglers report very good action. Trout anglers report a pretty good brook trout bite. Streams are running at normal summer levels.

Marquette Area

Trout and salmon fishing has been slow in Lake Superior’s Marquette Harbor. The fish are scattered and hitting in anywhere from 140 to 220 feet of water. Spoons and flies are both producing decent results. Anglers venturing out to Stannard Rock report good success on lake trout.

Escanaba Area

Salmon fishing was picking up last week in Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. Anglers reported catching decent numbers of king salmon and a few lakers and steelhead just outside the harbor in Escanaba. Walleye fishing remains slow, but a few yellow perch are starting to hit. The fish are scattered, and anglers are having to move around to find them, but most are catching enough for a meal or two.

Menominee Area

Trout and salmon are hitting in Lake Michigan’s Green Bay in 60 to 80 feet of water. Walleye fishing has been good in the Menominee River. Crawler harnesses are producing good results, as are jigs tipped with minnows. Perch fishing has improved in Green Bay north of town, and a few have been caught in the river, too.

Bergland Area

Perch, walleye, and bass fishing remains good on Lake Gogebic, but anglers are having to work for them. Bass and walleye are hitting in hard-bottom areas. They are feeding on crayfish. Fish also are hitting along the weeds in 6 to 12 feet of water. Crawlers and leeches are both attracting attention. Perch and some walleyes are hitting live bait fished in 25 to 28 feet of water.

Iron River Area

Bass fishing has been good on most lakes in the area, including HagermanChicagon, and Ottawa. Walleye fishing has been decent, with the best action coming on live bait fished during low-light periods. Panfish have moved out of the shallows and are hitting wax worms, leaf worms and minnows.
