Illinois River: The sauger bite is slow with fish being caught near the tailwaters of dams or on the flats vertical jigging jigs with minnows or pulling “three-way rigs.” The white bass are starting to hit well up on “flats” on the river. Catskills

Rivers were pretty well blown out last week due to some heavy thunderstorms that rolled through the region, but waters may very well be fishable by now. The Esopus escaped the rains and fish were looking at nymphs, small BWOs, a few isonychias and spinners. Attractor flies can also be effective now. www.catskillflies.com

Manitowoc Area

In the Manitowoc and Two Rivers area, trout and salmon anglers had a decent week of fishing. Anglers had to contend with some strong winds and high seas, creating difficult trolling conditions on Lake Michigan. In between unfavorable fishing conditions, anglers had some success fishing the piers and trolling shallower depths, landing some quality fish.

Algoma Area

Anglers have been reporting some success casting spoons for trout and salmon off the piers in Algoma and Kewaunee. The fish are mostly being caught during the night with a few being caught during the day. Anglers had some good fishing to start last week, but things slowed down during the middle of the week.

Western New York

Lake Erie and tributaries: For smallmouth, use shiners or crabs to take fish from 20- to 40-foot depths wherever there’s structure. Walleye are hitting a bit more consistently between Barcelona and Dunkirk, as well as around Myers Reef and Seneca Shoal, but action is still slow. Worm harnesses are the way to go. Lake Ontario
