International Falls, Minn. The body of a Koochiching County man was found in a pond where he was fishing trout, authorities said.

James A. Skulan, who lived near Pelland Pit pond, was found by recovery crews Sept. 18. The 39-year-old man was reported missing the night before when a friend went to check on him and found Skulan’s dog sitting on shore and Skulan’s hat floating in the water. Skulan’s tackle box and ATV also were there.

Fargo, N.D. Pollution control officials said last week they’re monitoring storm-water discharges in an effort to find out why more than 1,000 fish died in the Red River near Fargo.

The dead fish were found in the river on the city’s northern edge over a several day span two weeks ago. Investigators suspect that the fish suffocated when oxygen levels in the river dropped suddenly. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and DNR are working with their counterparts in North Dakota to determine what caused the
