
Illinois gearing up for fall trout seasons
Two weeks prior to the fall trout opener, the fall catch-and-release fly-fishing season will open at nine sites on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Two weeks prior to the fall trout opener, the fall catch-and-release fly-fishing season will open at nine sites on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The passageway would potentially replace a dam on the Boardman River, which the state DNR considers a “Blue Ribbon” trout stream.

A stretch of the Gibbon River and its headwater lakes are being poisoned so Yellowstone National Park can remove “exotic” fish and create a refuge for west slope cutthroat trout and river-running grayling.

The goal is to offer fishing opportunities to those willing to venture into the backcountry.

The state spent $1.29 million on the operation in 2016, and a total of 2.2 million trout are stocked annually.

Anglers can pay a daily fee to fish where these fish are stocked during certain parts of the year.
Two fishing outings during the past week demonstrate that plenty of stocked trout are still available.

Although the facility will not be back to normal until 2019, it’s expected to meet trout-egg obligations by next year.
