Walleye action was probably as good this past week as it has been all winter in many areas, especially during low-light periods. Panfish and northern pike seem to be biting as well.

Know which jigging to employ when and you’ll reel in more walleyes and panfish this hard-water season.

Panfish populations are thriving in Lake County’s Big Bass Lake. Just don’t expect to catch many namesakes. The lake is loaded with small bass under 14 inches, but big bass are tough to come by.

There was no safe ice in southern Michigan, but a few anglers were getting out in open water on Lake Erie, the St. Clair River and Saginaw Bay and enjoying a pretty good walleye bite.

Ice is still iffy, meaning at a number of locations, ice fishing isn’t recommended.

Overall, walleye and panfish action has been a bit off, but should improve as more lakes or areas within them become accessible.

Upper Mission offers more depth and structure than its neighbor to the south, while Lower Mission has more vegetation and shallower water. Both are known for producing crappies and bluegills, as well as plentiful and

East Fork Lake is one of the top 10 – if not one of the top 5 – bass fishing spots in all of Illinois.

A good amount of snowfall across a good portion of the state keeping anglers on their toes.
