With its stained water and current, Old Abe “fishes well” during the day. There is not a lot of backwater habitat, nor a lot of vegetation. Fish rocks, wood, and current breaks.
The most successful walleye anglers also seem to be downsizing their baits, implementing jigging baits and tip-ups, and staying on the move. Panfish reports have been a bit off as well.
Instead of killing pike, anglers are asked to report, release tagged northerns caught in the lake.
Walleyes are sluggish in most locations, providing short windows of feeding activity during low-light periods of the day – typical for this time of year.
While walleyes are the primary target in Benton, yellow perch are a close second. They provide high numbers of good-sized fish, which have been a staple in the lake for years as well.
