Officials in Whiteside County have been fielding reports of cougar sightings since late September. The Whiteside County cougar was captured on a trail camera on private property. It is believed the cougar killed in DeKalb

The photo recently gained news media attention after it was posted on social media.

The attack occurred less than 10 miles from the February 2019 mountain lion attack of a Fort Collins man who killed the young lion in self-defense at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space.

The boy, 3, was grabbed by the neck and his father threw a backpack at the cougar. It let go of the child and grabbed the pack and climbed a tree.

Officials say the cougar recently killed three alpacas, a miniature horse and a deer.

The image of the cat was caught on a landowner’s trail cam July 7 in daylight hours northwest of Ironwood, in the far western portion of the Upper Peninsula.

The National Park Service called it a rare feat.

The attack comes after state wildlife officials announced they recently trapped and killed five mountain lions about 220 miles away in western Colorado after residents reported aggressive behavior by the predators.
