Autumn angling: Last chance for open-water lake trout

During the spring, and again in the autumn just before the lake trout-fishing season closes to protect them while they spawn, they can be caught on basic tackle – and a boat is completely optional.

Snowbank Lake, Lake County

Its iconic lake trout population, an abundance of walleyes and smallmouth bass, and its northern pike – which includes the rare silver-phase pike – make it a destination lake in these parts.
