They’ve been found in other Pennsylvania waters for years, and like their saltwater counterparts, freshwater jellyfish will sting people. But their stingers are so small they would not penetrate human skin.
Initially, the fish kill was mostly gizzard shad, but now is widening to more species and is likely to affect tens of thousands of fish.
Some of the fish may have been affected by viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus, a contagious pathogen, but DNR is still waiting on confirmation.
Michigan Sea Grant, Michigan State University Extension, the U. S. Geological Survey’s Great Lakes Science Center, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research, and local fishery organizations will participate in several regional workshops the next two months highlighting research and information about the fisheries.
