On Lake Michigan, a mixed bag of coho, kings, and lake trout are being caught all across the lakefront.
Each spring Northern Pike migrate up the Kankakee River finding places to spawn. The fish are looking for warming backwaters with newly emerging vegetation. These movements are tied to rising river height and water temperature. Using river gauges at Shelby and Dunns Bridge anglers can get an idea when to get out.
The best action this week was near Portage and east to the State Park but action was hit or miss.
In search of salmon and lake trout. No real reports on trout yet, but stream action should be picking up.
In fact, there are praise-worthy perch in depths of 4 to 10 feet and – here’s the real surprise – that range doesn’t necessarily need to be accompanied by weeds to be productive.
Who knows if the ice we have is going to be all the ice we’re going to get.
