Very cold temperatures have kept most anglers from open-water fishing. Most are now waiting for ice fishing to get started.

As 2021 arrives, pandemic threatens to take another bite out of fund-raising efforts; Pheasant Fest canceled

Early ice is pretty nice. Especially now, as the popularity of modern wheelhouses has grown. I’ve noticed fewer and fewer anglers creeping onto first ice with a simple sled and chisel.

We lost the ice and then gained it back – still, exercise caution and use common sense if you venture out on the ice. And in Todd’s Tackle Tips … light ice augers.

Use the day to scout for shallow-water fish that
