Once hunted to the brink of extinction, elk could be reintroduced to the forest in northeastern Minnesota.

The DNR randomly selected the three hunters from a drawing pool of more than 25,000 applicants. The winning hunters are from the greater Madison, Marshfield and Manitowoc areas.

Kansas went 103 years, from 1904 to 2007, without any confirmed sightings of mountain lions. But the state has since seen 36, including 12 last year and three this year.

Elk tourism, like many outdoor activities across the country, appeared to be pandemic-proof. The ability to have a personal safari without leaving your car caused traffic jams last year in Benezette.

Following several successfully managed Wisconsin elk hunts, the DNR is planning the fourth hunt in state history this fall.
