Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, anglers mostly miss out on the spring bite, but they remain hopeful for summer bass.

Little Grassy, a 1,000-acre lake tucked in the south corner of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, appears to be clamping down on its reputation as one of southern Illinois’ largemouth bass hot spots.

The action is picking up for anglers targeting northern pike and walleye with those seasons now open. And bass anglers are at full throttle during what is typically the spawn.

Clark’s walleye growth rates run above state average, but there aren’t a lot of large walleyes in the lake.

There were quite a few reports this past week that indicated suspended crappies in 8 to 12 feet or so, just outside the bays or other shallow locations. As for walleyes, success has been better

As water temperatures rise well into the 50s, fishing is warming up, too, particularly with crappies – if you know where to find them.

While the lake has been stocked with walleye fry intermittently, its ability to naturally produce the fish is most responsible for the exceptional numbers.

Perhaps the first and best way to move in that direction is with a longer rod.

Heading into this weekend’s fishing opener, you should expect to find walleyes in shallow water.
