Sample comes back suspect, second sample submitted; wildlife officials moving forward as if the mule deer will ultimately be determined positive for CWD.

Traditional firearms hunt opens on Nov. 27.

Participation numbers were down, but those who did hunt experienced a record-high success rate of 13.1 percent.

State wildlife officials are expecting a far better harvest this year. But the isolated reappearance of chronic wasting disease has led the DNR to impose mandatory testing in some areas for the opening weekend.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will be setting up check stations around the state to collect lymph node samples from hunter-harvested deer and elk.

Stopping the spread of CWD is important to everyone who enjoys the outdoors, and helping the Game Commission and any other state agencies involved with this task should be a priority for all of us.

If confirmed positive, the 1.5-year-old buck, harvested in Sidney Township, would be the 11th free-ranging deer in Michigan found to have CWD.

Bucks were among 40 deer reported to be on the 84-acre ranch in Waupaca County.

A video (above and at mndnr.gov/cwd) explains how to get deer tested for chronic wasting disease. Testing will be required in portions of north-central, central and southeast Minnesota during the opening weekend of firearms deer
