Open-water fishing is the norm these days as the ice has all but disappeared. And those open-water anglers are catching fish. Here’s where – and what.

The catfish you catch depends on the body of water.

Temporary rules establishing bag limits, season dates, and other regulations for harvesting catfish with a bow, crossbow or by hand are now in place while Department of Natural Resources staff complete a companion permanent rule.

Agency wants to enact the regulations on an emergency basis to protect catfish over winter. DNR officials hope to have permanent rules ready by next fall.

Officials will spend about 1,200 hours researching channel cats over the next two years.
