Newton Lake is changing and hasn’t produced one of its famous 10-pounders in a long time, but the 1,750-acre Jasper County cooling reservoir still ranks high among anglers.

Carlton’s muskie population is a surprise to many. There are bigger muskies swimming the waters – it’s included on the list of lakes in Illinois that has yielded a muskie 50 inches or larger.

Salmon size in 2019 heaviest since record-keeping began.

The lake was designed specifically with fishing in mind.

Along with the rough fish, Lake Sule contains plenty of bluegills, channel catfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappies, and bullheads, along with those muskies and walleyes.

Little Grassy, a 1,000-acre lake tucked in the south corner of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, appears to be clamping down on its reputation as one of southern Illinois’ largemouth bass hot spots.

Fishery has a reputation for producing trophy bass, and continues to produce younger fish at an impressive rate.
