Timing is everything, so get out early … or late, depending on which species you’re pursuing in the autumn.

A great tactic to pick apart a school quickly is a small Jigging Rapala-style lure or small spoon. Lures like these sink fast and alow you to cover water quickly.

If you’re in the mood for fall walleye fishing, realize you might have to befriend an old nemesis, the wind. While wind’s not usually pleasant, it can help you catch fish.

When minnows and other baitfish are plentiful and relatively easy to seize, trout vigorously eat them. Swimbaits then stand out as an excellent way to match the hatch.

This is not the time for small flies and subtle presentations. Large streamers are the name of the game here.

Blade baits, modified or not, are an excellent lure for the cold-water season. When largemouth bass have completely left the shallows, the triangular metal baits with considerable weight for their size will get the job

Dropshot baits include shad style when minnows and shad are top food sources, straight tail finesse worms for added coaxing, and wacky. All are killers with undulating action.

“This is a finesse technique that works best on outside edges of grasslines and around boat docks.”
