Michigan fish smaller today? Study says yes, but not all anglers have noticed

Two separate pieces of news from late 2025 have Michigan angler Todd Hutton eager to take notes on the fish he catches in early 2026.
The first news item: Michigan DNR stocked 19.5 million fish last year at nearly 800 sites.
The second: A study led by the University of Michigan showed that fish in the state are smaller today than they were in 1945.

Ongoing study takes a close look at Michigan’s moose population

Michigan researchers now have 56 moose wearing GPS collars, part of a project now in its second year to better understand survival and population growth of the animal in the western UP.
Earlier this month, 41 new moose were captured and collared, while two others that had been captured last year were outfitted with new collars. Included in the newly-collared group were 20 adult females, 10 adult males and 11 calves.

Deer baiting legislation clears Michigan House

Legislation to allow deer baiting during the hunting season received bipartisan approval by the Michigan House of Representatives by a 66 to 38 margin earlier this month and was sent to the Michigan Senate for consideration.
Sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Wortz (R-Quincy), House Bill 4445 was previously approved by the House Natural Resources and Tourism Committee.

Avid southern Illinois outdoorsman on goose hunt dies trying to save dog

A 23-year-old goose hunter from southern Illinois died last month after he fell through the ice of a frozen pond while trying to save his dog.
The New Baden Fire Department responded to a report that a man fell through the ice of a frozen pond shortly after 3 p.m. Jan. 26. After several hours, a search by several emergency responders transitioned from a rescue to a recovery mission, and the man’s body was recovered the next day.

New state law bringing clearer license rules for Illinois hunters

While new laws giving landowners and farmers more flexibility to hunt nuisance deer got a majority of the attention as the calendar flipped to 2026, a lesser-known law is expected to “clean up” the hunting license process in the state.
The new law is the result of House Bill 3678, which has a goal of “clarifying and simplifying hunting license rules for the public.”

Black carp $100 bounty program expanding to cover more waters

The hunt for black carp is intensifying in 2026, as Illinois DNR and a growing group of state and federal agencies expand the waters where anglers are eligible for a $100 bounty program.
Texas is the latest to join the effort. Anglers who catch a black carp in the Red River may be eligible for the same $100 bounty per fish that has been offered on the Illinois River and, more recently, the Mississippi River.
