New state law bringing clearer license rules for Illinois hunters

A new Illinois law that went into effect Jan. 1 is designed to make the hunting license process less complicated, thus encouraging more hunter participation, according to lawmakers behind the legislation. (Photo courtesy of Bill Key)

While new laws giving landowners and farmers more flexibility to hunt nuisance deer got a majority of the attention as the calendar flipped to 2026, a lesser-known law is expected to “clean up” the hunting license process in the state.
The new law is the result of House Bill 3678, which has a goal of “clarifying and simplifying hunting license rules for the public.”
