At my age, the outlets for satisfying my competitive urges have dwindled dramatically. I quit playing hockey years ago when I could no longer distinguish my “good knee” from my “bad knee.” Golf is too time consuming, and even if I did pick up the sticks again I’m pretty sure I’d be bunting the ball down the fairway instead of bombing it. Boxing and mixed martial arts are out of the question.

Yes, Irondequoit Bay is part of Lake Ontario and is managed as such under Lake Ontario-specific angling regulations.
But keep in mind, too, that at 1,660 acres, the big bay is a fishing water all its own, and should be approached with that in mind when you’re making a visit to the Monroe County hot spot.

A pair of men, one posing on Facebook as a female wildlife photographer to gain access to properties, have been charged and fined in connection with the illegal killing of two big bucks in western New York.
New York Department of Environmental Conservation officers said Jayson Zorda, of Oneonta (Otsego County), and Kevin Butler, of Afton (Chenango County), traveled to the Erie County town of Tonawanda to illegally kill the bucks in an area closed to deer hunting.

These days there are countless hunting, fishing and trapping shows on TV, on stations such as The Outdoor Channel, The Pursuit Channel, The Sportsman Channel, World Fishing Network and others. And, oh yes, don’t forget YouTube and its maze of options. Some shows are better than others; some are much better. I watch a few and avoid most.
But when I was growing up, there was only one hunting and fishing show. And every Sunday at 3 p.m. I was glued to the TV, watching “The American Sportsman.”

Sportsmen hearing the words “Chautauqua County” might immediately think of Chautauqua Lake, and with good reason. The big western New York water is regarded as one of the finest fisheries in the state, with walleyes, bass, muskellunge, and panfish attracting scores of anglers during both the open-water and ice-fishing seasons.
