Her AKC-registered name is “Sayre Hill’s Eight is Enough,” a laughable take on the fact that Molly is the eighth Labrador retriever over the years to enter our home.
Laughable, because we know there will likely be more. That said, Paula and I take these puppy decisions seriously. The timing has to be right. Calendars are cleared to allow for a singular focus on bonding and getting control of the little ball of fur early to avoid training challenges down the road.

Fall turkey hunting doesn’t draw the kind of attention as does the spring gobbler season, but that’s understandable.
After all, fall turkey hunting seasons usually overlap with deer season and small game seasons in most states, and whitetail hunting and grouse or waterfowl hunting always seems to trump other activities, certainly for the majority of sportsmen and women. That’s too bad, because fall turkey hunting can be every bit as exciting as the spring season when a thunderous gobble rattles the hardwoods.

Bashakill WMA a versatile Region 3 hunting and fishing spot in New York

Southeastern New York’s Bashakill Wildlife Management Area is one of those unique tracts that offer a variety of recreational opportunities.
The sprawling, 3,107-acre parcel offers not only hunting and trapping opportunities, but some quality fishing. And the tract includes the largest freshwater wetland in the region, so it’s not surprising that it’s designated as a Bird Conservation Area, the 1,920- acre wetland serving as a magnet for a variety of bird species.

Our freezers are already pretty well stocked as we head into another hunting season. There’s leftover venison, including some backstraps and roasts, as well as plenty of burger mixed with pork fat.

A couple pheasant and turkey breasts, some already ground into burger and others pulled and barbecued and ready to be thawed for a quick meal. Walleye and salmon fillets from summer outings on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. But there’s a couple things missing, and I desperately want to add to the freezer this fall with bear and squirrel meat.

Young anglers from New York qualify for High School National Championships in 2025

A foursome of young anglers from the Southern Tier won Bassmaster New York State Junior and High School Classic titles last month on Onondaga Lake.
Horseheads High School students Beckett Kraft and Grant Edwards ran off with the high school division title, while Sullivan Kraft and Jude Pfiefer took the junior division crown. The victories qualified the anglers to compete in the Bassmaster Junior and High School National Championships next year.

Black bears in New York State don’t always get a lot of attention from hunters. In fact, most of the harvest comes from whitetail hunters who encounter a bruin while pursuing deer and take advantage of the opportunity.
That said, there is a growing number of sportsmen and women interested in focusing on bear hunting, and as the biggest of the state’s big-game animals continues to expand its range, more opportunities are arising to take a black bear in the fall.

Actually, he owns two.
