DNR sent a public reminder to anglers and outdoor fans on May 8 warning that possessing live red swamp crayfish is prohibited in Illinois.
“Red swamp crayfish compete aggressively with native species for food and habitat, and they’ve been known to cause structural damage to property,” said Illinois Conservation Police Officer Brandon Fehrenbacher, who oversees the DNR Office of Law Enforcement Invasive Species Unit. “These crayfish spread by escaping from live crawfish boils and from fishermen who illegally use them as bait.”

The Missouri Department of Conservation reported that turkey hunters in that state checked in 43,380 birds during Missouri’s 2024 regular spring turkey season, which ended May 5. Youth hunters harvested 3,739 turkeys, bringing the overall 2024 spring turkey harvest to 47,119.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the start of an angler creel survey of the Mohawk River and adjoining Erie (Barge) Canal from Rome to Waterford.
The program began May 1 and will run through the end of October, and will only be conducted in 2024. The Mohawk River and the adjoining Erie (Barge) Canal east of Rome includes five permanent dams, nine seasonal/moveable dams, and five active hydropower plants. The river provides a warmwater fishery that contains smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, tiger muskellunge, and a variety of panfish.

Raccoons, foxes, and skunks do some of the most harm to duck populations.
And so trappers in Delta Waterfowl’s predator management program are working a record 46 sites in the prairie pothole region during the 2024 breeding season.
Trappers worked at 31 sites in 2023. The program expansion is an incremental step in Delta’s delivery of its Million Duck Campaign, a $250 million fundraising initiative with a goal to produce 1 million ducks annually.
