New York’s ‘lights out’ initiative protects migrating birds

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Office of General Services remind New Yorkers they can help protect migrating birds as they navigate night skies by participating in the ‘Lights Out’ initiative.
Joining national and international efforts, state buildings participating in Lights Out will keep non-essential outdoor lighting from affecting the ability of birds to migrate successfully throughout New York.

New York DEC reminds Hudson River anglers of new striped bass slot limit regulation

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding Hudson River striped bass anglers that effective May 1, striped bass caught in the Hudson River and tributaries north of the George Washington Bridge may only be kept if they are between 23 inches and 28 inches long.
The new regulations required and approved by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) reduce recreational striped bass harvests by 14.1% while balancing the preferences of New York anglers.

In May 2021, the Woodruff DNR fisheries team conducted a fyke netting and electrofishing survey on Amber Lake (recently renamed from Squaw Lake) west of Minocqua off Hwy. 70 to assess bass and panfish. Six nets were placed and checked daily over three days. During the electrofishing survey, game fish were collected along the six-mile circuit, with 1 1⁄2 miles sub-sampled for all species.

Wisconsin’s historic Spooner fish hatchery building to undergo renovation

One of the oldest buildings in Spooner, Wis., will soon receive a badly needed face lift as Friends Into Spooner Fish Hatchery (FISH) plan to renovate a building built in 1913.
That building served as the area’s first fish hatchery, and sits on the south side of Hwy. 70 across from the DNR’s regional headquarters in Spooner.
“We hope to begin working on this project as soon weather permits,” said Jim Bishop, FISH’s renovation project leader. “The old building is in rough shape.”

Four indicted over alleged poaching of giant buck from Clinton County, Ohio

A 28-year-old Wilmington, Ohio, man was indicted by a grand jury May 10 for his alleged role in the poaching of an 18-point buck last November.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, on behalf of the Ohio DNR, announced the indictment of Christopher J. Alexander and others allegedly involved in the case.
“Blinded by greed, the defendants set their sights on fame and fortune while disregarding basic hunting regulations,” Yost said in a statement released by his office.
The indictment, returned by a Clinton County grand jury, accuses Alexander of unlawfully harvesting the deer on Nov. 9, 2023.
