Pennsylvania Mixed Bag: PGC to hold junior game warden camps

The Game Commission is holding five one-day Junior Game Warden Camps across the commonwealth in June and July, providing attendees a structured, fun-filled day learning about the career of a state game warden.
Campers, ages 12 to 15, will spend the day with wardens, gaining insight into the job and the commission’s mission of managing and protecting the state’s wildlife and habitats while promoting hunting and trapping.

Minnesota Mixed Bag: Alumacraft announces more layoffs

An international maker of recreation vehicles has announced another large layoff at its boat plant in southern Minnesota.
Alumacraft, which manufactures aluminum fishing boats and is owned by Canada-based Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc. (BRP), is located in St. Peter. On May 23, BRP informed the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development that it had let go 106 of the plant’s workers.

North Dakota angler snags record-tying paddlefish

Tyler Hughes, of Mandan, N.D., snagged a record-tying 131-pound paddlefish on May 3 in the Yellowstone River southwest of Williston.
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has confirmed that Hughes’ 74-inch paddlefish ties the record from 2016 by Grant Werkmeister, of Williston. The two fish are the heaviest caught and documented in North Dakota.

New York Mixed Bag: NYS Outdoor Writers to hold spring conference in Oswego County

The New York State Outdoor Writers Association will hold its annual spring conference in Oswego May 30 through June 2. Headquarters will be the Clarion Hotel and Suites Riverfront in downtown Oswego. During the event, NYSOWA members will have the opportunity to fish Lake Ontario and Oneida Lake as well as the famed Salmon River and Oswego River.

Wisconsin Mixed Bag: Free fishing weekend arrives June 1-2

Wisconsin residents and visitors who have not yet bought their annual fishing licenses may fish for free during the annual Free Fishing Weekend June 1-2. For that weekend, anglers do not need a fishing license or trout stamp, but they must follow all fishing regulations, including size limits and bag limits.

Man searching for shed antlers shoots grizzly during encounter in Montana

A man searching for antlers shot and killed a grizzly bear on April 25 during an encounter on private land northwest of Wolf Creek.
The man was walking along a ridge covered with low trees and brush with his two dogs at his side and the wind at his back while searching for shed antlers. After seeing a fresh grizzly bear track in a snow patch, he continued along his path and a few minutes later he first saw the bear standing near the top of the ridge about 20 yards away.
