Fort Frances, Ontario Two Americans have been fined $1,600 for illegally importing leeches into Ontario from Minnesota.

Robert Kline, 33, of Bena, Minn., and Kenneth Eliason, 57, of Kanawha, Iowa, were convicted in Fort Frances court and fined $800 each. They also forfeited 25 pounds of leeches and a cooler to the court. A complaint from the public lead a Ministry of Natural Resources Sioux Lookout District conservation officer to the men. […]

Winnipeg Canadian news services report that a record-sized black bear was struck by a car in Manitoba on Aug. 30. Provincial wildlife officials say the bear weighed 856 pounds five days after it died. They estimate it had lost at least 30 pounds in body

Although record books measure bears by skull size rather than weight, Manitoba officials believe this may be the heaviest black bear ever reported. Little Falls, Minn. A proposal to implement catch-and-release trout regulations on Little Rock Creek will be the focus of a public input meeting to be held Sept. 18.

Little Rock Creek is a coldwater stream in Morrison and Benton counties that’s managed for brown trout. “Catch and release only” regulations are being proposed by the DNR to help build a self-sustaining trout population. Crappie action has picked up on Lake Sissiton in 4 feet of water. Look for a few walleyes on Hall Lake in 8 feet of water. Minnows have been taking the majority of fish here. Bear hunt progressing

Staff Writer Grand Rapids, Minn. Although the 2001 bear season doesn’t wrap up until mid-October, harvest numbers at this point indicate a better season than last year. “It’s gone pretty well in most areas,” said DNR bear project leader Dave Garshelis. “It looks like we’re up approximately 20-percent statewide from last season at this point.”
