Youth deer hunters in Illinois set harvest record

Brett Duby says his daughter’s first youth deer hunt included some serious decision making – which, as any experienced hunter knows, means she had a good day. The young hunter passed on a doe and tagged a 9-point buck in Iroquois County.
Meanwhile, as trends go, the one involving youth hunters in Illinois is encouraging: More seem interested in deer hunting, and more are finding success in the woods.

Illinois DNR says, ‘never mind’: Trout stocking will take place at most sites before Oct. 18 season opener

Whims of Illinois’ weather have created a conundrum for DNR, resulting in flip-flops on its decision to stock trout for the fall season, which is set to open Oct. 18.
Last week, DNR announced that stocking of rainbow trout in most of the 60 lakes, rivers and streams designated to open for the season had delayed due to “warmer than normal temperatures. But on Wednesday, a cool snap meant things were changing — again.

Striped bass remain focus at Cedar Lake in Illinois’ Jackson County

Curious anglers are eager to see what DNR has learned from a striped bass tagging program that was initiated at Cedar Lake in 2023.
The 1,750-acre water in deep southern Illinois has long been one of the top – if not the top – striper lakes in the state, with 20-pound fish reported by anglers over the past decade.

Ralph Loos: Deer hunting times, they are a-changin’ – albeit gradually in Illinois

Alterations to the Illinois deer season have been less drastic than expected, and it’s already been more than 15 years since DNR biologists and managers stood in front of hunters at public meetings around the state to sing, “The times, they are a-changin’.”
They stayed in tune, mostly, best I recall.

Illinois trout stocking delayed until possibly Halloween

The only luck a trout fishing die-hard will have when the season opens
Oct. 18 will be to maybe land a carp dressed up for Halloween as a rainbow trout.
That’s because DNR’s semi-annual stocking of trout in selected lakes and ponds has been delayed due to unseasonable weather. Thus, the fall season will experience a slower than normal start.

Illinois DNR asks anglers to keep smaller bass at Lake Sara in Effingham County

DNR continues its work to manage the largemouth bass population in Lake Sara, a 640-acre body of water in Effingham County.
A protected slot limit put in place back in 2017 appears to be assisting in the effort, but fisheries biologists are encouraging anglers to keep more bass below that 15- to 18-inch slot. In other words, keep smaller bass.

Ralph Loos: As Southern Illinois ‘Wildlife Lab’ turns 75, quail interview remains most memorable

John Roseberry led me into a nondescript office, handed me a coffee, pointed to a chair and somehow managed to lasso and lock down my attention for exactly 5 hours and 47 minutes. Seven coffees or more later, I found myself absorbed by his story of what has gone wrong for bobwhite quail in Illinois.
Roseberry, who spent his entire professional career at the Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory at Southern Illinois University, worked on other wildlife species, too, including whitetails, but he had a special interest in quail research.
