Deputy Natalie Phelps Finnie pinned as new Illinois DNR director

DNR’s new leader is a southern Illinoisan who has spent the past 18 months as a deputy under former director Colleen Callahan.
She comes from a family that has strong connections to the state’s outdoors – and even stronger connections to politics.
Assuming Natalie Phelps Finnie  is approved by the Illinois Senate, she will  become the second woman to head DNR. Callahan, who held the job since 2019, was the first. Callahan stepped down Jan. 16 at the request of Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Illinois Outdoor News’ Catch of the Year: 140-pound paddlefish

An 8-pound largemouth bass from Crab Orchard Lake. A 4.8-pound crappie at Kinkaid Lake. A 51.75-inch muskie caught in northern Minnesota.
What would it take for a fish outside of the “cool species crowd” to earn the coveted Illinois Outdoor News “Catch of the Year” title?
Pittsfield’s Jim Dain answered that question in 2022 by yanking a 140-pound paddlefish from the Lake of the Ozarks.

Illinois turkey hunters continue stance of ‘keep on, keepin’ on’

The most common question I get this time of year, as DNR permit lotteries roll on and hunters begin preparing for the first week of April, is “Why are we still using the same season structure?”

Former big league pitcher accused of deer poaching in Illinois

Danny Cox, who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1980s, was one of eight people accused of deer hunting violations in St. Clair County.
It is part of two poaching cases in Illinois that have captured the attention of deer hunters. The other involves the poaching of 23 deer in Hamilton County.
